A 3-minute video teaching students how to safely use a panel saw

Client

Utah Valley University Woodworking Lab, 2022

Skills & Tools Used

Task analysis, scripting, shooting video with a dSLR, editing video and narration with Adobe Premiere

Stakeholder Feedback

“Your understanding of the process was professional and informative. I am sure that many students will be able to use this video to help in the use of the panel saw. Please come back and make me more videos for every machine in the shop. This would be a great way to allow students to learn machine usage without me having to repeat processes when students are absent.”

Project Story

The Challenge

Create an instructional product to teach woodworking students how to safely operate a panel saw independent of in-person instruction.

My Role

Solo project: I performed the task analysis, wrote the script, directed the shoot, filmed the video, edited the footage, recorded the voiceover narration, and added titles and music.

The Solution

This 3-minute video makes it convenient for students to review just-in-time instruction for safely using the panel saw if the in-person instructor is otherwise occupied.

Pre-Production Planning

Before filming the video I completed a task analysis and wrote this script. It includes narration, titles, and camera directions.

Video Production and Editing

I shot the video on a dSLR camera and then used Adobe Premiere to edit the clips together, insert audio narration and background music, and add graphics.

The Finished Product

The woodworking instructor plans to post a link to this video near the panel saw so students needing to review the procedure can independently watch the video on their phones.
